Autistic students or students on the autism spectrum may be best supported from a neurodiversity perspective. In this presentation, we will explore the diagnostic features of Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD) and look at research underlying neurological differences associated with ASD. From there, we will examine how differences in neurology can lead to the development of behaviors associated with diagnostic criteria and discuss a process for approaching students on the spectrum from a flexible space that recognizes their particular strengths and respects their differences. Behavioral strategies such as pairing and reinforcement will also be discussed.
